The Story of Guy Fawkes
Every year on November 5th, people in the UK celebrate Guy Fawkes Night. It is also known as Bonfire Night. The celebration includes fireworks, bonfires, and burning an effigy of Guy Fawkes. But who was he, and why do people remember him?
Guy Fawkes was born in 1570 in England. He grew up in a strict Catholic family at a time when Catholics were treated unfairly. Many Catholics wanted to change the government because King James I did not support their religion. 1.
In 1605, a group of Catholic conspirators planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill the king. Their leader was Robert Catesby, but Guy Fawkes was the man who had to set off the explosives. 2. However, one of the conspirators sent a letter to a friend warning him not to attend Parliament that day. The authorities discovered the plot just in time.
Guy Fawkes was caught in a cellar under Parliament with 36 barrels of gunpowder. He was arrested, tortured, and later executed. 3. Today, Bonfire Night is a reminder of this failed plan, and it is still celebrated with fireworks and bonfires across the country.
